Every boat we build is built to the highest standard of quality using traditional wooden boat building methods in all aspects of the process. Let us walk you through the design and build of any of our Butson models.
It all starts with a boat builders design and passion - put into the sculpting and shaping of a ‘half model’. These small wooden half models are the first step in the process. They are to scale and act as the “Blueprint” for the design of the boats, continually referred back to during every other step of the process.
Next, this half model is transcribed onto a body plan (full scale drawings of the entire boat) in order to be able to create the frames for the boat.
From these drawings, templates for the frames and then the frames themselves are cut out, varnished and assembled to create the initial skeleton of the boat.
Eac
h of the boats can be customized for our clients in many ways. We build on average 2 boats over the course of a year, and our new owners play a key role in helping us to create this traditional
wooden work of art. To begin with, interior instrumentation is designed and leather upholstery, bottom and stain colours are chosen by the owners. The boat can then be truly customized by the owner as they work with our designer to make the boat their own.
The maiden voyage of the new boat with it’s owners is a moment to be remembered at the shop. The owners have been such an integral part of the whole process that the event becomes almost a family affair.
All of our planking, frames, deck and interior are built with solid mahogany. Our deck frames are built of oak, and for fastenings we use only
copper rivets and stainless steel screws and bolts.
Strength and beauty are of utmost importance, and the following building measures are taken in keeping with these values.
-
•Hull: 3/4” double planked hull with an oilated cloth sandwiched between layers. Connected with copper rivets and through fastened to the frames with stainless steel screws
-
•Frame: Bolted with stainless bolts
-
•Deck: Individual deck planking edge nailed so no surface fastenings show
We invite you to stop by the shop anytime to walk through previous builders and owners’ history and to dream with us about your future.
